Eid-ul-adha

Eid-ul-Adha or the Festival of Sacrifice is a religious festival celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Nabi Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Nabi Ismail as an act of obedience to Allah. The devil tempted Ibrahim by saying he should disobey God and spare his son. As Ibrahim was about to sacrifice his son, God intervened and instead provided a lamb as the sacrifice. This is why today all over the world Muslims who have the means to, sacrifice an animal (usually cows, goats and sheeps), as a reminder of Ibrahim's obedience to God. The meat is then shared out with family, friends (Muslims or non-Muslims), as well as the poor members of the community or al-fakirs.

Eid-ul-Adha is the latter of two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims, whose basis comes from the Quran. Eid al-Adha begins with a short prayer followed by a sermon.

Eid-ul-Adha annually falls on the 10th day of the month of Zul Hijjah of the lunar Islamic Calendar. The festivities last for three days or more depending on the country. Eid al-Adha occurs the day after the pilgrims conducting Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. It happens to be approximately 70 days after the end of the month of Ramadhan.

This Eid-ul-Adha has been a rather sad and morose celebration for Malaysians. As we witnessed our family and friends suffer from the Major Landslide in Bukit Antarabangsa.
Killing 4, injuring 19 and uprooting thousands...this was definitely a test of strength and faith. many areas surrounding Bukit Antarabangsa were deemed high-risk. water and electricity supplies were cut off. there was even claimed looting, which was denied by police.

apparently, the landslide happenned because of an abandoned housing project at the top of the hill. because it is abandoned, the drainage system was not maintained. and hence, causing a blockage...which then caused the land to...slide (?!). And looking at the mass of earth, it looks like tanah merah, which in the first place is not suitable for construction.

so why are there still housing/building projects in these unsuitable areas!

the rapid real-estate growth in klang valley is freakish, that we are seeing more and more balding hills. the one that saddens (and scares!) me the most is the new housing project on the hill facing hartamas. rows and rows of super-linked houses perched on hill terrain, and even MORE being built higher up the hill. next thing you know, they will encroach onto the other side of the hill next! and there goes our greenery. *sigh*

the question is...WHO is approving all this?? have we, malaysians, lost all respect for nature? are we really striving to be concrete jungles?? or are these people just out to make that extra buck? while risking people's lives? where is the integrity? the trustworthiness?

*sigh*

it's all good that the government is honing into the issue now. but at the cost of lives?
and the silly thing is...at the same area, many years ago...there was the highland towers collapse. did we not learn anything from this?

how sad.

down with the capitalists!
